East Ayrshire, established in 1996, is the newest council area in Scotland and was created out of portions of the former districts of Cunninghame, Kyle and Carrick. It borders Dumfries and Galloway, North Ayrshire, South Ayrshire and North Lanarkshire councils. East Ayrshire’s population was 177,000 in 2013. The council reports that there are 67,950 households in East Ayrshire. 17,270 of these households are single detached homes with a plot size of under 0.5 acres; 11,260 are semi-detached with a plot size of between 0.5 to 1 acre; 7,300 are terraced with a plot size between 1 to 2 acres; 2,440 detached properties on plots over 2 acres.
