Understanding the Housing Market in Gloucester: Key Facts and Figures

Sitting next to the River Severn, around 40 miles from Bristol and around 60 miles from Birmingham, Gloucester is a cathedral city in southwest England and the county town of Gloucestershire, close to the border with Wales. Historically, it has been an important port and with the development of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal to the Severn Estuary in 1827, ships could bypass a once difficult stretch of the River Severn and more easily access the ocean, meaning the city could move more easily, in terms of global trade. Today, however, what was once the country's most inland port, lost importance to facilities at Bristol and while it still functions as a harbour for private boats, it no longer deals in freight. Today, perhaps the most important industry in and around the city is aerospace, an industry going back by at least 100 years with the first British jet aircraft, tested at the airfield in Brockworth and Messier Dowty, GE Aviation, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence and Fortis all being based on the business parks, located just outside of the city, with Fortis and BAE, located in the Gloucester Business Park. However, the health sector is the city's largest employer, with almost 15% of the city's workers, employed in hospitals and residential care. Manufacturing comes second, specifically in metal products, machinery and equipment; rubber and plastics. Gloucester is in many ways, still very much a city of engineers. There is a plan in place to build on the cultural base of the city. Gloucester's Cultural Vision and Strategy 2021-2026 is a partnership between the Gloucester Culture Trust and Gloucester City Council that will enact cultural development in the city and the Heritage Strategy 2019-2029 brings in the Heritage Forum to develop the city's heritage offer. Projects include the regeneration of Kings Square, which is the home of JOLT, a creative hub supporting the creative industries; looking at the possibility of creating a new major venue for the city; and regenerating the Cathedral Quarter, with £1.9 million already secured to restore some of the historically and architecturally significant buildings in the Westgate area. Gloucester's city centre doesn't have much by way of tower blocks but alongside retail and office space, has plenty of traditional terraces in Victorian and Regency styles. There are also several new-build housing estates that buyers can choose from. Cheaper property can be found just to the south of the city, in Barton and Tredworth. In recent years, Gloucester Docks has become a very popular residential spot, offering a city-living lifestyle, where new-build houses, sit among warehouses that have been converted into attractive apartments, near shops, bars and leisure facilities. Areas like Abbeydale and Abbeymead, to the east of the city, contain suburban housing, popular with families.
