Lisburn and Castlereagh County Council was established in April 2015 as the first local government authority in Northern Ireland to be formed by a voluntary amalgamation of two previous councils, Lisburn City Council and Castlereagh Borough Council. The council’s area of responsibility covers an area of 723 square kilometres, with a population of 149,287 according to the 2011 census (figures based on wards). This makes it the third-largest local authority area in Northern Ireland after Belfast and Antrim, but ahead of Armagh and Newry, Mourne and Down.
