Understanding the Housing Market in Coventry: Key Facts and Figures

Located in the West Midlands, approximately 20 miles to the south and east of Birmingham, at what is possibly England's most central point, Coventry has been an important manufacturing centre for 100s of years. While in the past it was known for producing dyes and cloth (notably, ribbons) and then bicycles, now it is home to the UK's car industry with an electric vehicle (EV) battery Gigafactory planned for development. While the city suffered from unemployment and poverty during the decline of the UK's manufacturing base in the '80s, it now enjoys a robust and modern economy. It is currently the UK City of Culture, a well-deserved title awarded to it by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in 2021, which it will hold until 2025. It is the third city to be awarded this designation since the scheme's inception in 2013, which means extra funding for the redevelopment of arts and sporting infrastructure as well as a series of special events which, in 2021, included a 3-day music festival 'Home Sessions', organised by the Coventry-born musician Terry Hall from legendary band The Specials. The city is considered to be in the top 10 cities in the UK, in which to live and work and it's not too hard to see why. The research was carried out in 2015 by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and think-tank Demos and took into account, for example, housing affordability, employment rates, income and skills, commuting times and the environment. And housing in Coventry is, relatively speaking, quite cheap, the population is skilled, the economy healthy and the city is extremely well-connected with the three economic powerhouses of the UK, that are London, Birmingham and Manchester. In terms of property styles, Coventry offers everything you would expect from a modern city, from city centre apartments, family homes and social housing, to build-to-rent and buy-to-let. And with a famously unfussy, friendly character and as it is, surrounded by beautiful countryside, it is easy to see why it is so popular a destination for homeowners, renters and property investors alike.
