The county has a population of around 542,000 residents and comprises 908 square miles (2,344 km2) in total area. It has one city (Carlisle) and six districts: Allerdale, Barrow-in-Furness, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden and South Lakeland. Cumbria has been around since 1974, when it was created from parts of Westmorland and Cumberland.
