Fife, in Scotland, lies on the Firth of Forth just east of Edinburgh and north of Dundee, close to the border with northern England. It's the country's third largest county and stretches from the top of Scotland right down to its borders with England and East Lothian. Fife has a total population of 422,100 (Census 2011) which gives it a population density of 1.1 people per hectare or 104 people per square kilometre. Fife is one of Scotland’s 32 council areas. It was previously known as Kinross-shire until it officially became Fife in 1929. The capital city is Kirkcaldy and the council’s administrative headquarters are located in Glenrothes.
