Its population was 142,253 in the United Kingdom Census 2011, making it the smallest of Wales’ historic counties by area and third-smallest by population (only Monmouthshire and Brecknockshire are smaller). Its largest town is Welshpool with other main towns being Builth Wells, Newtown, Welshpool and Llanwrtyd Wells, which all lie along the River Wye, an important transport route from the Industrial Revolution onwards.
