The county was formed on 1 April 1996 and comprises the former districts of Rhondda, Cynon Valley and Taff-Ely. It includes the towns of Rhondda Fach, Maesteg, Bridgend and Pontypridd, which lie along the River Rhondda – it’s namesake – which flows through the county from west to east.
