The Shetland Islands (officially the Shetland Islands Council, Scottish Gaelic: Na h-Eileanan Siar) are an archipelago of over 100 islands and small skerries located just off the northeastern tip of mainland Scotland, 160 kilometres (100 mi) from Aberdeen, 190 km (120 mi) from Bergen in Norway and 240 km (150 mi) from Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. The island group has a population of around 23,560 (2010) which accounts for 0.2% of Scotland’s total population. The capital of Shetland is Lerwick which has a population of around 7,600. Housing in Shetland is mostly privately owned, with no council housing and very few rentals. Around one third of homes are owned by people, coming from outside of Scotland, mainly England and Scandinavia.
