The Scottish Borders is one of the thirty-two local government council areas in Scotland. It borders the City of Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, and the Northumberland districts of England. The county has been known as the Scottish Borders since the 1920s, but in 1975 the Local Government (Scotland) Act established that it was to be known officially as Scottish Borders, not Border Region, with border defined as an administrative county boundary, which also forms part of the international border between Scotland and England.
