Torfaen County (Welsh: Sir Ddinbych a Torfaen) was created following the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 as one of the eight administrative counties of Wales from the former administrative county of Monmouthshire. It was subdivided into five districts and nineteen community councils, but under local government re-organisation it became three principal areas with the same twenty-two community councils in 1996 and then two unitary authorities in 1998.
